With the increasing shift towards digital banking, the Bank of the Philippine Islands (BPI) offers a convenient and efficient way to deposit checks through its mobile applications.

Whether you are a retail client or a business owner, here are five things you need to know when using the mobile check deposit from the BPI app and the BizLink app

The feature is currently limited to specific BPI clients

The mobile check deposit feature is rolled out only to BPI Preferred, BPI Gold, and BPI Private Wealth clients. If you are among these clients but do not have the feature available on your BPI app, you should reach out to your relationship manager for assistance.

If you want to be part of the BPI Preferred, BPI Gold, and BPI Private Wealth client pool, you may go to the nearest BPI branch and look for the branch manager to know the qualifications.

Business clients who are BizLink-enrolled can also take advantage of the mobile check deposit facility thru the BizLink app.

You can use the mobile check deposit facility on both BPI app and BizLink app for free.

You can deposit 24/7

The ability to submit your check for clearing even in the wee hours of the night is the biggest convenience the mobile check deposit facility can provide. Be mindful, however, of the cut-off times. All deposits made after 3:00 PM on weekdays, on weekends, and on holidays will be processed the next banking day.

For BPI app users, the processing of your checks will take up to two banking days. On the other hand, BizLink users can expect clearance of all local checks and Manager’s Checks within the day.

You can monitor the status of a check deposit through the mobile apps

You can conveniently use the BPI app and BizLink app to see if you have successfully cleared your check. When checking the status of your deposit, you may encounter these four indicators:

Status

Definition

For clearing

The check is still being processed.

Cleared

The check has been successfully processed and the amount has already been credited into your chosen account.

Rejected

The check has technical defects — either the uploaded image is unclear or there are issues in the details indicated on the check.

Returned

The check could not be processed and was returned by the drawee bank.

There are several reasons why your check might be rejected

Unsuccessful check deposits using the BPI app and BizLink app can be attributed to several defects. Here are some of the common errors that could result to your check being rejected by the facility:

• Date issues

o Post-dated checks

o Stale-dated checks

o Checks with invalid or incomplete dates

• Format issues

o Checks in the old format

o Mismatched entries (amount in words and in figures)

• Capturing issues

o Use of photocopy, electronic, and other non-original paper checks

o Alterations, erasures, and smudges that stain crucial parts of the check

You must keep the physical copy of the check

While the mobile check deposit feature spares/saves you the time to physically visit a branch, you are required to keep the physical check for a period of one year from the date it was deposited. Based on the guidelines set by the Philippine Clearing House Corporation, you would be given five days to comply with verification procedures if BPI, the check’s source bank, or regulators require you to submit the physical check.
