World Water Day is observed annually every March and focuses on highlighting the importance of water in all aspects of life, from health and hygiene to agriculture and industry, and emphasizes the need for equitable access to clean and safe water for all. It also raises awareness about the global water crisis and advocates for the sustainable management of freshwater resources.

Here are some details that you need to know about the state of water in the Philippines:

Access to safe water

Approximately 67% of households in the Philippines have access to a basic safe water supply. This number is lower compared to previous years. Having access to safe water is crucial for several important reasons that impact health, well-being, economic stability, and even disaster preparedness.

Water use efficiency

In 2023, the country's overall water use efficiency (WUE) was recorded at Php 222.81 per cubic meter of water used, an increase of 5.6% from the previous year. Water use efficiency plays a crucial role in sustainable water management, especially in areas facing water scarcity or where water resources are limited.

Water pollution situation

Pollution of water bodies is a major concern, primarily due to industrial, agricultural, and residential waste. The Philippines is a major contributor to marine plastic pollution, with an estimated 0.28 to 0.75 million tons of plastic entering the oceans annually from coastal areas. Water pollution results in annual economic losses attributed to health-related costs, reduced fisheries production, and diminished tourism revenues.

The Philippine Clean Water Program

This program is designed to promote the sustainable use of water resources while preventing the degradation of water quality caused by untreated wastewater and other pollutants. It includes various laws, policies, and programs that focus on wastewater management, sanitation, and protecting the country’s water bodies from contamination. By focusing on wastewater treatment, water body rehabilitation, and community engagement, the program seeks to ensure the long-term sustainability of the Philippines' water resources.

By celebrating World Water Day, we can better understand the importance of water, address the global water crisis, and inspire collective action to ensure that everyone has access to safe and clean water now and in the future.
