In 2023, the country's overall water use efficiency (WUE) was recorded at Php 222.81 per cubic meter of water used, an increase of 5.6% from the previous year. Water use efficiency plays a crucial role in sustainable water management, especially in areas facing water scarcity or where water resources are limited.

Pollution of water bodies is a major concern, primarily due to industrial, agricultural, and residential waste. The Philippines is a major contributor to marine plastic pollution, with an estimated 0.28 to 0.75 million tons of plastic entering the oceans annually from coastal areas. Water pollution results in annual economic losses attributed to health-related costs, reduced fisheries production, and diminished tourism revenues.
