The Bank of the Philippine Islands (BPI) and DHL Express Philippines have embarked on a strategic partnership, marking a significant step towards sustainability in the aviation and banking industries. BPI has become the first bank in the Philippines to join DHL’s GoGreen Plus service, a global initiative that allows customers to reduce the CO2e emissions associated with their air freight with the help of Sustainable Aviation Fuel.

By participating in DHL’s GoGreen Plus service, BPI aims to reduce its annual greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from shipping documents by 90%.

“The partnership with BPI is a step in the right direction. Together, we want to make international express shipping more sustainable. We hope this agreement will inspire other companies to transition to low carbon emission transportation services using sustainable aviation fuel,” said Nigel Lockett, DHL Express Philippines Country Manager.

The GoGreen Plus allows DHL customers to reduce the carbon emissions associated with their international shipments using Sustainable Aviation Fuel.

“BPI has always been mindful of our responsibility not only to our clients, but also to the country and the environment in which we operate,” said Eric Luchangco, BPI Chief Finance Officer and Chief Sustainability Officer. “As a bank with a strong commitment to addressing climate change, we are delighted to have this partnership with DHL. This initiative reaffirms our strong focus on sustainability in all aspects of our operations and aligns with our vision to help build a better Philippines – one family, one community at a time.”

Last year, BPI partnered with DHL for its GoGreen Plastic Flyer Recycle Box program, an initiative in which DHL’s customers collect used DHL plastic flyers. DHL then collects these flyers, compresses them into plastic bottles, and transforms them into reusable building blocks called EcoBricks. These EcoBricks are subsequently donated to selected DHL beneficiaries for use in school constructions. Notably, BPI was also the first bank in the country to join this recycling program.

With the new partnership, BPI and DHL aim to set a new standard for sustainability in the logistics and banking industries. This collaborative effort aligns with Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) 13, which addresses climate action, and SDG 17, that emphasizes on partnerships to achieve sustainable goals.
